Winter Learning Journey: Day 7
#7 Keep New Zealand Beautiful
Activity 1:
Three things to do to make your neighbourhood more beautiful:
- Plant a tree either on the street corner that lacks greener or a neighbour in need of some landscaping.
- Create bird feeders around the neighbourhood to attract more birds.
- Gather up the neighbours and make a community clean up.
Activity 2:
I enjoy listening to music and drawing. Here is a photo of me listening to my favourite music and drawing.

My three favourite events:
- I enjoyed watching the Maori and the non-Maori people discussed how the world is developed into different cultures.
- I really liked the Matariki Ritual, it is when people mark the beginning of Matariki, tell stories, celebrate life and remember those who have died last year.
- I also really enjoyed watching all the elders from around the country who performed the kapa haka as the finale to the festival.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 5
Day #5: One step at a time…..
Activity 1:
There were lots of trees and plants which I hadn’t seen before. The smell and sound of the park was so beautiful and after admiring a very unusual looking tree for a long while, I turned to ask Curious Kiwi what the strange looking tree was and then I noticed that there was no sign of my group and Curious Kiwi. Then I realised that I was lost! So there I stood, no clue about my surroundings in a place I had never been before, hoping my group would realise that I was lost and would come find me. Minutes past and dawn was slowly approaching and that was when I started panicking and I was extremely petrified, even the slightest sound of a bird swooping past scared the life out of me. The day started to become darker and scarier. I was very confused and didn’t know what to do. I called out to my friends but there was no reply. I was starting to get tired and hungry. I walked for a few more minutes and then realised that I’d gone too deep into the reserve. Then out of nowhere I could see a faint light down the creek bed, as it got closer I had no idea what to think of it “ should I run or should I see where the light is coming from?” The light quickly shined on me and tears filled my eyes as I realised it was a search and rescue helicopter circling above, I waved my arms to get its attention and I was seen…….
Helen Clark
I chose Helen Clark because I admire her wondrous works both in New Zealand and across the world.
Helen Elizabeth Clark was born on the 26th of February, 1950 (67 years of age) in Hamilton. Helen served nine years as a former prime minister of New Zealand (1999-2008). She also was the first women to lead the United Nations organisation and was the chairperson of UN development programme from 2009 till April this year, the United Nations development group is a committee that includes the heads of all the UN funds, programme and department working on development issues such as putting an end to extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality, empowering women and reducing child mortality, just to name a few. Helen advocated strongly for New Zealand’s comprehensive programme determined to stop climate change.
Bonus Activity:
I would like to cycle the Otago Rail Trail one day, it sounds fun and it would be nice to spend it with my family and enjoy the natural scenery that Otago has to offer.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 4
Day #4: Swimming with the sharks
Activity 1:
The local people volunteered to help save the beached whales by getting buckets of water and pouring it onto the whales to help keep them stay cool and hydrated, while this was happening others were trying to carefully push the whales away from shore and into the water.
Activity 2:
Whale Rider
Summary:
This movie is about a young girl by the name of Paikea Apirana (“Pai”) who was originally born a twin, but her twin brother and her mother die in childbirth. In the story, the leader should be the first-born grandson - a descendant of Paikea, the Whale Rider, who rode on top of a whale. However, Pai is a female and in which her grandfather (Koro) does not want her to be recognised as the “Whale Rider” but soon he realises he was wrong.
I give this movie a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ five-star rating.
Bonus Activity:
From my perspective:
I am very distraught because our dolphins are getting killed every year by the nets of fishermen and we are losing more and more of our dolphin species and also our other marine life as well so I think we need to ban fishing at Farewell Spit in order to save our marine life.

Winter Learning Journey: Day 3
Day #3: Wild Eyes
Activity 1:
Kea
I chose to adopt the kea:
Activity 2:
Here are reasons why I think New Zealand should be a predator free country:
From my perspective I do not think killing the predators would be a good Idea instead they should just take them away. Seeing that taking them away would be an impossible task, so I can see why we need to kill them, simply because it would do a great amount of good for our environment and wildlife because of how the possums are destroying our trees, and also it ruins the scenery and the beauty of our nature and is endangering or native birds.
