Bok, bok, I think there's a hen in here!

We are learning to understand and follow the structure of a procedure.
I know I can do this when I write ten easy steps on how to make a paper
hen.

What you need:
  • Colouring pencils or pens
  • Paper plate
  • Some thin cards
  • Black, brown and orange paint
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Coloured paper

Steps:
  1. First, grab your paper plate and then paint the back of the plate yellow or brown.
Screenshot 2015-11-17 at 12.12.53.pngScreenshot 2015-11-17 at 12.12.11.png
  1. Next, put the plate somewhere to dry, take some thin card and cut out a beak for your hen. After you have cut of the beak, you can colour it in with felt tips or paint.
  2. Cut out a comb for your hen and you can colour it red.
  3. When the paint on your plate has dried, fold it in half so that the paint is on the outside. Screenshot 2015-11-17 at 12.46.23.png

Screenshot 2015-11-17 at 12.12.19.png

  1. Then fold the beak in half and staple it on the inside of the plate at the top of the fold.
  2. Staple the hen’s comb above the beak, along the fold of the plate.
  3. Paint or draw eyes for your hen.
  4. Give your hen some feathers, either by cutting the feathers out of coloured paper or you can draw the feathers on.
  5. Glue your feathers on both sides.
  6. Cut some grains or wheat using yellow paper. Give your hen a push and your hen will be able to rock back and forth pecking the wheat.

Hello, animals!

We are learning to understand and use descriptive language.

Success criteria-I know I can do this when I use appropriate adjectives, adverbs and verbs in my writing.

On Saturday I went to Rotorua with my brother, cousins and nephew.
When we arrived in Rotorua, we got off at Paradise Springs Wild Life to feed some animals. As soon as we got inside, we paid for ten packets of animal food.

Then we walked along an old pathway that led us to a very large fence for us to see the lions and we weren't allowed to feed them. So we had a look around and we saw a big dark long, cave that was filled with so many lions that I couldn't count all of them. After a little while we waved our goodbyes to the lions and walked back towards the other path.

Next we walked into a bush that had a gate so we opened it and it led us into a large yard. There was a garden full of vegetables but they looked fake and old. Then we saw a little, old, worn out shed which had a big sign in the the door that said open. When I opened it, it creaked. We went inside then out of nowhere a cockatoo bursted right at us so we ducked. My cousin didn't duck in time, so it landed on his head.

As time passed on , we went into another area which had another sign that said"Eels can grow up to 200 centimetres long and have been alive for more than 50 years. We continued to walk deeper into the sanctuary and found a narrow pond that had more than 10 eels in it. They were very large and we got to feed them with the food packets that we had brought. As I was watching them fight for the food, the sun set around us. Soon we moved on and it led us to six hungry pigs who kept snorting at us. And of course they were muddy. However I didn't want to feed them because they ate a lot. Their mama pig was sitting by herself snorting at us as well. I felt sorry for her and went over to her with my little nephew following with is  packet of food which he took off my cousin.

After feeding the mama pig, we said goodbye to them. As soon as we left, we found out that it was getting dark and so we had to pick up the speed. Next we went to a waterfall that stated" This fountain is a tourist attraction it was used in the 1800's till now and it is okay for drinking". After reading the sign , we felt thirsty so we tried it. It was so cold but very refreshing.
Image result for swans        Next we fed some ducks and there were lots of them. Then, we went over to the llamas and the wallabies but they were sleeping under a small tree. We moved to the horses. They were big, small, tall and short. There were so many of them. However we weren't allowed to feed them because they had hay.

Later on, we found the most beautiful swans but they were only two. I just wanted to feel it's feathers. Finally we got to see our last animal, they were the cute and cuddly bunnies. They were so adorable and and an employee told me if I wanted to hold one, so I did. I just wanted to take him home he was so soft. Then we waved good bye to the animals. As we left, my nephew wanted to stay with the animals but we told him that he cannont stay or else we will leave him be himself.

I had a very fun and exciting time at Rotorua. However it would be better next time if we had gone earlier so we could have a longer time to explore Rotorua.

Wow, what beautiful voice!

                                               Duffy Assembly

On Tuesday, we welcomed a visitor to our school and her name was Tasha Hohaia.
She was a Duffy role model for kids and she was promoting reading to the young students. She is very clever, talented and determined. Tasha is known for being on X-factor. She also sang a song called Mama knows best. She was so confident and had a strong and flexible voice. Then she sang her favourite song 'Price tag'(by Jessie J). She was fantastic so we gave her thunderous claps and cheers.

We are learning to describe a person.
I know this when I use verbs to describe Tasha and make my writing more interesting.

Hello! Nice to meet you!

We are learning to understand and use descriptive language.

Success criteria-I know I can do this when I use appropriate adjectives, adverbs and verbs in my writing.

On Saturday, we had a exchange student from Shanghai in
China, who we had to pick up from One Tree Hill College.

When we arrived at the college we waited and waited. We waited for a long time. Then at 3.00 pm  we saw her. She introduced herself to us  and  her name was Yang Ying. She had turned 15 yesterday and learnt English in China as well.

After our little chit chat we hopped into the car and then we drove off. When we got to Mt. Wellington we went to the bakery to have something to eat. We all had a banana smoothie with apple pie which was very yummy. I wished I could have some more but we were too tired and and all we wanted was to get home. When we got home, we saw my brother's car.  When we opened his door, he was fast asleep and he was snoring very loudly! We started laughing and told him to wake up and to go  inside the house because it was raining.

Finally we got inside and Yang unpacked her stuff, while we prepared dinner. For dinner we had chicken drum sticks with potato mash. When we all ate hungrily as if we have not eaten for days. The food was delicious! I wanted some more but I was too full. When we finished we watched the news on T.V 1 and then we went to sleep.

I had a great day meeting Yang. I think I will enjoy getting to know her better. I hope that the weather will be sunny so that we can show her around the place.

Hello! Old friend!

During the weekends,my mum told me that my old friend came back from Australia and is coming for a visit. I felt very happy and excited! when he came he looked so different and much taller. I am 1 year older than him but I am amazed at how big he's grown.

When we were bored  we played outside and we found some white pebbles that were beside the old palm tree. We hid the pebbles and took turns while finding them. If we couldn't find them  you have to give them a clue. However the minimum was one and the maximum is three.
After playing we went inside to eat. We had chicken ,chop suey, sausages, vegetables and apple juice. It made my stomach blow just after eating, but it was very delicious.
later on we started a drawing contest inside the kitchen while my mum and my friends mum were talking.

First, he chose a car and we drew them.then we colored them and showed them to our mom and they thought we were artist. However, really we weren't trying our best we were just rushing and we know they were just lying.

Later they decided they were going to leave because it was getting late. They got in the car and waved goodbyes. I wished that they could stay a bit longer but their short visit was worth it!.

Happy birthday Grandma!

WALT: understand and use descriptive language.
Success criteria: I know I can do this when I use adjectives, adverbs and verbs in my writing.
Happy birthday Grandma!
On Saturday 23rd of May it was my grandma’s birthday, she was turning 90 and it was very special day for her. We celebrated her birthday at our church hall.

We had to go to church early because we had to arrange the tables, chairs, food and plates for everyone, it was hard work. By the time we finished, people were starting to arrive so we quickly left to bring grandma to the hall. When we came back with our grandma, there were a lot of people there waiting for us. We felt embarrassed but they all knew we worked hard setting it all up.

After we got inside, we started with the speeches from my grandma’s nine children . When the speeches had finished, we had some food. There was ham , prawns, taro, shop suey, curry and flavoured drinks. When the prawns came out I felt like taking a big handful because they are my favourite. However, my younger cousins and I always went last, it was so unfair but we are the youngest.By the time I got to the prawns , they were all goneI was a bit angry at first but then I got over itas it wasn’t that important at least I got to have some chop suey and tarro.

After everyone had finished eating, some performed a samoan dance in front of grandma and I was one of those dancers because one grandchild was chosen to represent each child that grandma has.
The first dance was performed by my cousin and the 8th dance was my cousin was my niece’s. She is only 6 years old and she had to do it all by herself I felt sorry for her because it was her first time and she was very shy in front of everyone. When she had finished, she was about to cry and she was red in the face. However, we were so proud of her.

Then it was my turn and I was extremely scared, I had butterflies in my stomach. I was scared crazy but I had to face my fears and go through with it. When I ran up to the front, my heart was beating so fast because I thought people might be watching for my mistakes, I was so nervous. However, I believe in myself and believe I can do it. After I had finished I felt so better but I was red in the face as well. When I had finished my dance everyone started clapping and cheering. I was proud of my dance and it lasted longer than the other dancers.
Soon after all the dancers were finished, it was time for the cake. We stood next to grandma and sang “Happy Birthday” in Samoan and English. When we finished singing, she blew out the candles and we all cheered. We all got a piece of cake. How ever the children always take what is left. It was so not fair but at least we all got to taste. I only managed to get small piece.

Finally we all left and we hugged grandma goodbye. I hope that my grandma stays healthy for many more years to come.☻♥

Saint Philomena, Pray for us!

Saint Philomena is a saint and martyr of the Roman catholic church. She was a young Greek princess who was crowned in the 4th century. In the early 19th century, Philomena died at the age of 14. Her feast day is on the 11th of August.

Saint Philomena was discovered in the ancient catacombs of Saint Prisilla in Rome on May 25th, 1802. The tomb had three tiles marked with these words Lumena/Paxte/Cumfi. These words means “peace be with you Philomena also drawn on the tiles some symbols 2 anchors, 3 arrows and a palm.

Over the past years she has performed miracles to people with sickness or facing difficulty in their life. She became overnight, one of the most popular saints in the church earning the name of "The Wonder Worker" because of her miracles.

Saint Philomena signifies "Daughter of light" and soon became princess of Corfu.
Her parents did not believe in God but soon was converted as Christians and took Philomena to Rome. The emperor fell in love with her but Philomena refused for she wanted to be clean and love God only. The emperor was furious so he sent her to the dungeon. Then the next day she still refused and the emperor got angrier and scourged her. However, she still refused so the emperor tied her to the anchor and put her to drown. The next morning he found out that Philomena survived.

The emperor put her again into the river to drown but survived yet again. When the people knew what had happened they converted into Christianity and they knew it was God helping her and that is why 2 anchors, 3 arrows and a lily symbolises Saint Philomena's life.

Saint Philomena could be anybody's patron saint and she is a patron Saint for the children as she died as a very young 14 year old. Even through tough times, when you have stress or any kind of sickness, pray to Saint Philomena and she will assist you.

Do you know the story of Sua?

WALT retell the story of Sua in my own words using dialogue.
I know I can do this when I use speech marks to end and start a speech.

The retelling of Sua's story ....

A long, long, long, long, time ago on the island of Samoa, there was a small man called Sua.

He was brave, strong and always protected his sister. One day, Sua heard his sister cry and it made him furious. So he asked his sister ''Why are you crying?” and his sister said, ''The man had hurt me''. Sua was angry when he had heard this, so he went to search for the man. He looked everywhere in Samoa.

Then one day after the sun has set, Sua saw the man. So he jumped on his horse  with his stick and struck the man. When he had calmed down, he saw that he had broken the man’s legs. Sua felt sad and went back to tell his sister what he had done. After telling her about what had happened, she told Sua to go to another country otherwise he will go to prison.

The next day, he said “Goodbye” to his family and packed his bags. Sua felt really sad. Then he went on the plane to NZ and found that it was really cold in Aotearoa and he only had a T-shirt on. When he checked his bag, he only had one singlet, a bible and two ten cent coins. He was freezing in the cold. Even though he didn't have that much, he worked as hard as a train. Every day he woke up, read his bible “Christ is my light’’, had his breakfast and went to work. He did that every day for 2 years. After 2 years, he married a Samoan lady and had 6 children. He lived happily ever after with his big family………..

I totally love this Saturday!

I know I can do this when I write a recount using the correct language features
WALT write a recount using the correct punctuation marks.

My fun Saturday,

My cousins, mum and I went to a carnival celebration of the Salvation Army,  moving to another area somewhere in Mt Wellington. As we entered the place, I met my school friends Cheska, Greshka and Kayla. First we had some shaved ice with blueberry drink just like a slushy. It was my first time to taste it and I actually did not like it because it had no flavour.

We went to the games area. First, I played on the skateboard challenge. It was fun but hard because I had to verse Cheska and none of us won the game. In the next game, Greshka and I played on the double ladder challenge. We had to climb the ladder which kept on turning around and around and around. It made me feel dizzy that when I got off it, I could not balance well and it felt like the world was spinning around. I knew it wasn't easy because the ladder was slippery so I had to drag myself up using my stomach and it really hurt.  The game was so difficult that nobody won! Next Kayla and I played in a Boxing game. It was very easy for me because I was able to make  her fall down three times. At last, I won!

After four more games, I gathered my tickets from the games that I won.  A total of 12 tickets and I received a prize  -- a sherbet, and a blue drink bottle. When I ate my sherbet it was yummy and sour and I really liked the taste of it. It was just what I needed after playing a lot of games that made me feel exhausted, thirsty and hungry.

Finally,  mum, my cousins and I decided to go home because we were all tired and sleepy. I had a fun day last Saturday and I really had a fantastic day with my school friends, my cousins and my mum. I wish that there will be another Carnival for free that offers free rides, free tickets and free food for everyone to enjoy!

My weekend with my cousin Mariah!

WALT write a recount using appropriate language features.
I know I can do this when I use speech marks to start and end a speech.
On the weekend my little cousin Mariah came to my house. When she arrived, I could hear her screaming as if she was informing us that a famous star  was coming to town. When I opened the door, she ran inside with a little giggle. I was surprised at how fast she came in the door, it was like she was on fire!

When my mum came out from the kitchen, she didn't expect her to be running around the room like a wild cat. She opened her mouth but did not say anything.  I took my cousin inside my room and she brought her two little bouncy balls.  We played catch with her two balls  but missed every time I threw the ball to her.

She always says,”Wow, look  at me!” But she never catches the ball so I just smiled. Then we played the second round. She said,’’I win - you lose!’’. I really didn't like it when she said it because actually she never even caught the ball in the last two rounds. I felt it was a bit unfair….

Then my mum came in to the room with 2 bowls of steaming soup. Because Mariah was really hungry she drank the soup as fast as a hungry bear.  After eating we went to the lounge to watch a movie but I was already falling off to sleep. So my mum turned on the TV just for her. When I woke up I found her playing in my room again. She was throwing the ball back and forth into a box.
When I joined her she just ignored me. Every time she would throw the ball, she would say, ‘’ Look at me’’. ‘’But you haven’t even got a goal yet’’, I told her. ‘’Well, it doesn't  matter because this is just for the fun of it’’ she answered with a big smile. After our conversation I heard her mum knocked on the door. It was loud as a thunder strike! Mariah had to go home so I hugged her and said goodbye.

I had a good time with her and she taught me a lesson that when you play, it doesn't  matter if you  win or lose, what’s important is the fun of it.

My fun but tiring weekend!

During the weekend my friends, mum and I went to city centre to see the boats.

When we arrived, there was a big crowd of people talking, yelling, laughing and riding their bikes across the bridge. It was like people were waiting for a famous actor to perform for them.  I just ignored the people and looked into the water.

The water was very calm and gentle waves were making soft noises that were like music to my ears. Then all of  a sudden, I saw very large containers piled next to each other.  Some were closed and some were open. It made me wonder what was inside them. We kept walking and we watched kids play games down at the dock.

Next thing we knew, it started to rain heavily so we  ran to our car like fast athletes otherwise we will get wet.  But when we got to the car, the sun shone again.  It felt like it was playing games on us. We drove up to the hill called Bastion Point which is located next to Mission Bay for a picnic.  I was starving so I ate straight away.

After eating, we played soccer with my friends.  It was a lot of fun but was very tiring for me afterwards. We watched people flying their kites and it was relaxing just watching them. Then it was time to go home.  I was tired I could hardly move my  limbs. But I had an awesome weekend with my family and friends.  I wish that we could do this again sometime soon.

My fantastic Weekend!

On Saturday 14th of June, my auntie and I went to her Parish hall. I was in a Samoan Puletasi. It looked very pretty, it had red flowers with black outline and a white background.

We went past a lot of people standing next to their cars as we were going in the hall. Suddenly, we heard a loud “BOOM!” Loud music bounced in my ears, it was so loud I could still hear it even if I covered my ears. We sat down and made ourselves comfortable. There were not  as many people coming into the hall as I expected.

Then a man walked in front of us with a microphone thanking us for coming. He said that there will be performances and they will be serving us cups of tea later. The first performance was by a girl  and her mother. It was pretty  good. The next person who performed was a lady and she was amazing! I tried to copy some of her moves but they were too hard.

Then the moment has came for me to perform. I was so nervous that I felt like I was shaking from the inside. But since there weren't that many people there, my nervousness faded away. I started to run  towards the centre of the hall with my bare feet because that is our culture. I did my very best to make my auntie proud of me. I was so proud of myself and I had finished my dance before I realized it. When the program was finished, we had a cup of tea and doughnuts. It was yummy!
Finally we said Goodbye and we went home. It was a long day for me but it was definitely a fantastic Saturday.

WALT write a recount of our weekend.
I know this when I can write a recount of what I did in the weekend.
